HIRING PROCESS

First things first... the hiring process can be long but we do everything we can to streamline the process.  With several steps that must be completed, it's not unusual for it to take 3-4 months for someone to get hired.  However, once you make the commitment and come on-board, you will be rewarded with one of the most challenging, rewarding and fulfilling careers out there.

STEP 1 - APPLY

Step 1 is easy.  Click the link and APPLY NOW.  Once your application is received it will be reviewed.  If you meet the minimum requirements you will be invited to test for entry to the Vermont Police Academy.  Congratulations, you've taken the first step on the path to a rewarding career.

STEP 2 - TEST

Prepare.  Study.  Train.  Entrance testing consists of two phases - a physical fitness test and a psychological screening.  Full details on the tests can be found here.  All the requirements are laid out.  Exercise and train and you'll be able to do it.

STEP 3  - INTERVIEW

With the tests successfully behind you, the next step is an interview.  Come in and talk to us.  The oral board is a process in which three or more veteran officers ask you a bunch of questions to see if you're what we're looking for.  The interview is about an hour long and is wide ranging.  Be honest in your answers.  Integrity is everything.

STEP 4 - BACKGROUND & POLYGRAPH

If you've made it to the background stage, you're more than halfway there.  We'll ask you to complete a comprehensive Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) and then meet with a detective.  The detective assigned to your background will review everything you've submitted, review your academic, military and/or employment histories and verify you are who you say you are.

A polygraph exam is required to attend the academy and is administered during this stage of the hiring process.  Again, honesty and integrity will help you sail through this step.  Shouldn't be a problem, right?

STEP 5  - MEDICAL EVALUATION

You've made it through the basic test at the academy.  If you've progressed this far we need you to check in with our doctors to ensure you're physically capable of handling 16 weeks at the academy and rigors of the job that follow.

STEP 6 - RAISE YOUR RIGHT HAND

If all goes well and all the boxes are successfully checked... all the 'i's' dotted, the 't's' crossed... then all that's left is for you to raise your right hand and take the oath to serve your community and help those in need.  Next step... the Academy.
